At Woodstation Elementary School, the safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. To ensure that we are well-prepared for various emergency situations, we conduct several types of safety drills throughout the school year. We believe it is important for you to be informed about these drills so you can support our efforts and discuss them with your children if needed. This year, we will be sending a message before and after an intruder drill. We will also have teachers debrief with their students, and we will send a guide for parents to debrief with their child at home.
Below are the types of drills we conduct:
- Fire Drills
- Intruder Drills
- Severe Weather Drills
We understand that discussions about safety drills can sometimes be unsettling for children. We strive to approach these drills with sensitivity and reassurance, focusing on the importance of being prepared rather than on fear. Our goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where students feel confident and secure.
As part of our commitment to supporting the whole child, we use a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to respond to students’ needs. This means:
-
All students (Tier 1) receive clear instruction, preparation, and reassurance before and after drills.
-
Some students (Tier 2) who may need additional support are provided opportunities to talk through their feelings in small groups or with a trusted adult.
-
A few students (Tier 3) who experience heightened anxiety or distress may receive individualized support from our school counselor or support staff.
This approach allows us to proactively monitor student responses and provide the right level of support to ensure every child feels safe and cared for.
If you have any questions or concerns about these drills or if your child may need additional support, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are here to partner with you and can also provide guidance on how to discuss these drills at home in a reassuring, age-appropriate way.
Thank you for your continued partnership in ensuring the safety and well-being of our school community.
